Other Requirements & Restrictions
Medical Exemptions
California law allows medical exemptions for lower tint on all windows. An assembly bill (AB-1303) amended Section 26708 of the Vehicle Code permitting darker tints under some medical conditions related to Vision and Skin. You have to submit the form to your physician or dermatologist and get it duly signed and certified to submit in the department of motor vehicles. After reviewing the process you’ll get the Medical Exemption Certificate allowing darker tints on the front windshield.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Warning
A first violation may result in a warning to fix the tint. A second tint violation could be a $25 fine. A third violation can result in a $200 fine and a civil infraction. Further stops can result in more serious legal actions.
Additional Notes
Tint must not be more reflective than a standard window. Dual side mirrors are required if the rear window is tinted. Film manufacturers must certify the film they sell in the state and the driver is required to have the certificate in their possession. State law requires a certificate or a sticker from the installing company and the manufacturer’s name and address.
Note on Front Side VLT: Text states 'Aftermarket film must allow more than 88% of light in, or minimum 70% VLT if combined with factory-tinted windows.' 70% is used here as the minimum combined VLT.
